The AMA Manual of Style
The American Medical Association (AMA) Manual of Style is the style guide for medical writing. The 10th edition was published in 2007. In addition to providing guidelines for medical writing, the text has grammar, punctuation and syntax guidance.
Reading published articles in specific journals is one approach to understanding style requirements. Another approach is to purchase the style manual. A third approach is to do both, which what we would recommend.
We would like to mention five article submission requirements.
1. Jagged right margins
The right margin is to be left jagged. That is, submitted articles are not to be justified.
2. Abbreviations
Article titles require words to be written in full. That is, abbreviations are not to be used. Paragraph 1 shows the requirements for using an abbreviation in the body of the text. However, the AMA is recognizable so that it would fit under the category of acceptable acronyms for use in a title. If the acronym is necessary to save space, it may be used in a title. Hence, the title of this article would meet AMA style requirements.
3. Gender neutrality
To present gender balance in writing, the style manual requirement is to avoid the singular and use the plural.
4. Parentheses
Parentheses are used to provide supplementary explanations, identification, directions for readers, or translations. Examples 1 and 2 show when parentheses and commas are appropriate.
Example 1
The differences were not significant (P > .05).
Example 2
The hemoglobin level, although in the normal range, was lower than expected.
5. Active voice
Use the active rather than the passive voice.
Example A, passive voice: Data were collected from 350 patients in the facility by physicians.
Example B, active voice: Physicians collected data from 350 patients in the facility.
